About Us
As the original producers of wollastonite, NYCO's corporate history dates back to the commercialization of this unique mineral. NYCO's New York wollastonite deposit was discovered in1810, before the mineral was known as wollastonite. This outcrop was initially mined for garnet, and wasn't rediscovered as a source of wollastonite until 1936. Koert Burnham, the son of a garnet miner, was encouraged by his father to pioneer the processing and potential uses of this mineral. A grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1947 paid for research at the New York State College of Ceramics; where many potential uses for wollastonite were discovered. Through a combination of experience and innovation, NYCO's two extensive wollastonite operations make us a leader in our industry. First, our Willsboro operation opened in 1953 in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, and continues to be an integral part of our mining and processing operations. At Willsboro, NYCO pioneered worldwide use of wollastonite. Due to the highly acicular nature of the ore body, products were developed - including those with chemical surface treatment - for an incredibly broad market. With Willsboro located in New York's Adirondack Park, one of the most beautiful and highly valued regions of the United States, NYCO is firmly committed to operating in an environmentally responsible manner. In December 1997, the addition of our second operation - Pilares - in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, ensures that NYCO will continue to be the company of choice for customers Although many of the properties of wollastonite are naturally occurring, NYCO's wollastonite ore is refined to remove natural impurities. It is then milled to exacting standards, enhancing wollastonite's natural properties and ensuring uniformity in our end product. Our unique manufacturing processes preserve the acicular structure that is an integral part of the success of our high apect-ratio wollastonite products. In addition to physical enhancement, some of our milled products undergo surface chemical modification to meet the specific requirements of each customer. In an increasingly technological world, NYCO has the experience and expertise to provide products that meet even the most challenging demands. Of the many qualities that set NYCO apart from our competitors, we remain unrivaled in the key areas of shipping, transportation, and distribution.
