Petroleum ether, also known as petroleum essence, is a light petroleum product. It is a mixture of low relative molecular mass hydrocarbons (mainly pentane and hexane). It is a colorless and transparent liquid with a kerosene odor. The density is about 0.63 to 0.66 g/mL, showing weak polarity, and is often mixed with strong polar organic solvents, insoluble in water, soluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol, benzene, chloroform, and oil. Mainly used as solvent and grease treatment
