  HPMC is short name of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose. It is a kind of multifunctional additive. Its main effects are water retention and thickening. It also have features of adhesion, dispersion, emulsification, film forming, suspension, adsorption, gel, surface activity and protective colloid.

  Pharmaceutical Excipient/tableting ingredient
  Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose has been used as an excipient in oral tablet and capsule formulations, where, depending on the grade, it functions as controlled release agent to delay the release of a medicinal compound into the digestive tract.It is also used as a binder and as a component of tablet coatings
  When used as binder in the tablet granulating, its density is normally around 2%-5%
  
  use in ophthalmic liquids/ Eye drops as lubricant
  Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose solutions were patented as a semisynthetic substitute for tear-film; Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose 2% solution has been documented to be used during surgery to aid in corneal protection and during orbital surgery. When used as thickener in Eye drops and artificial tears, its density is normally around 0.45%1.0%
