  　　　Under normal conditions, sulfur hexafluoride is in the gaseous state without color, toxicity, odor, combustibility and causticity. Being chemically stable, it provides excellent electrical insulation and arc suppression. Under the same pressure, its electric strength is 2.5 times that of nitrogen gas and its breakdown voltage is 2.5 times that of air. Under a pressure of 0.25Mpa, its breakdown voltage is equal to that of oil. Under medium pressure with other conditions being equal, its starting voltage for corona discharge is twice that of air. As a new generation of ultra-high voltage insulating medium much better than air and oil, it is widely used in circuit breakers, combiners, transformers, large-capacity cables, lightning arresters, X-ray machines, ionic accelerators, tracer analysis and smelting of nonferrous metals. In the semiconductor industry, high-purity sulfur hexafluoride is used as a plasma etching agent. In the production of optical fibers, it can be used as the source of fluorin for the manufacture of glass which is mixed with fluorin. In the manufacture of high-quality low-loss monomode fiber, it can be used as a doping agent of the insulating layer. It may be used as participating gas in nitrogen excimer lasers. It can also be used as standard gas in environmental tests and other tests, or be used for the preparation of standard gas.
