  Methods of Manufacturing
  In large scale preparations zirconium oxide is converted to carbide, which is chlorinated to yield tetrachloride.

  Reaction of chlorine or of hydrochloric acid with zirconium metal above 300 deg C; or chlorine on an intimate mixture of zirconium oxide & carbon above 700 deg C.
