The pure product is colorless monoclinic crystal. Industrial products tend to be yellowish brown, containing about 40-50% of magnesium chloride, and also contain impurities such as magnesium sulfate and chloride, and have a bitter taste. It is easily soluble in water and ethanol, and easily deliquesces when the humidity is high. 116~118℃ hot melt decomposition.
