PGA is a water soluble homo polyamide consisting of D and L glutamic acid monomers connected by amide linkages between apha-amino and gamma-carboxyl groups. It is biodegradable, edible and non toxic towards human and environment; it has broad applications in fields of medicine, foods, cosmetics, plastics and water treatment. Molecular formula: L-Glu-(L-Glu)n-L-Glu Molecular weight: The molecular weight ranges from 50 kDa to 2000 kDa with the degree of polymerization ranging from 500 to 5,000. The molecular chain of gamma-PGA has lots of carboxyl group, which can be formed hydrogen bonding internal molecules or between different molecular. It has high water absorbability and moisturizing effect. gamma-PGA can be used as thickener, gel, filmogen, humectant, retarder, cosolvent, binder and anti freezer.
